Senator Charles Schumer of New York is investigating claims that Debt Collectors are contacting relatives of the deceased to attempt to collect Credit Card Debt that the dead person is claimed to owe. Senator Schumer, Chair of the Senate Banking Committee, is quoted as saying,

"These companies call surviving relatives, often shortly after the death of a loved one, to coax or cajole them into making payments on the deceased relative's credit card," "To say the least, this practice is distasteful and unethical. Moreover, this practice may very well violate the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act."
